New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has introduced several schemes that are directly benefiting the common people. For instance, the benefits of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi are currently being extended to over 100 million farmers. Similarly, people are also reaping the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (Prime Minister's Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme). Under this scheme, beneficiaries can not only utilize electricity free of cost but also generate income by selling surplus power.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi is confident that, under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the target of installing rooftop solar units in 7.5 million households will be achieved by December. Currently, solar plants have already been installed in approximately 4.1 million households under this scheme.
The government launched this scheme in February 2024 with an allocation of ₹75,021 crore. In a post on the social media platform 'X', Joshi stated, "This scheme is rapidly transforming the country's energy sector, and over 4 million families have already joined it within just two years. Meanwhile, over 6.5 million applications are currently under processing, and work is progressing at a brisk pace to achieve the target of covering 7.5 million households within the next seven months." He added that low- and middle-income families, in particular, stand to benefit significantly from this scheme.
According to the Union Minister, 80 percent of the target for installing solar units on government buildings has already been achieved; to date, a total capacity of 855 megawatts has been installed across 53,874 buildings. He noted that while approximately 7,000 rooftop solar units were being installed per month prior to the scheme's launch, this figure has now surged to over 300,000. Notably, a record 316,000 solar systems were installed in May 2026.
The objective of this scheme is to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to 10 million households by installing rooftop solar units. Under the scheme, Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of 60 percent is provided for solar systems up to 2 kilowatts, and an additional 40 percent is granted for systems with a capacity between 2 and 3 kilowatts. The benefit of the subsidy is applicable up to a maximum capacity of 3 kilowatts.
Since the adoption of the scheme, the electricity bills of over 1.7 million households have dropped to zero, while consumers have earned an income exceeding ₹421 crore by selling surplus electricity back to the grid. To date, subsidies totaling over ₹22,750 crore have been disbursed under the scheme, with ₹2,743 crore alone being released in May 2026.
