The Election Commission of India (ECI) took a big step towards transparency by disclosing absolute voter turnout figures for the first five phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Emphasizing accessibility, the ECI reiterated that this data has always been available to candidates and the public alike.

In response to what it described as a "pattern of false narratives," the ECI vehemently defended the integrity of the electoral process. It emphasized the accessibility of voter turnout data through its app, debunking any claims of opacity or secrecy.

SC declines to issue directives to publish booth-wise voter turnout data

Following a legal battle, the Supreme Court declined to issue directives to the ECI regarding an NGO's request to publish booth-wise voter turnout data. Instead, the apex court advocated for a "hands-off attitude," endorsing the ECI's discretion during the electoral process.

Confidence in process integrity

Underscoring the impossibility of altering vote counts, the ECI highlighted the rigorous and transparent nature of the electoral process. With authorized agents of all candidates overseeing the polling stations and documenting votes on Form 17C, the integrity of the process remains intact.

Agents of candidates play a pivotal role in ensuring accountability and transparency throughout the electoral process. Armed with Form 17C, they record the total votes polled at each station, preventing any tampering or manipulation.

Transparent counting procedures

To further bolster confidence, the ECI outlined the procedure for candidate agents to accompany Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and relevant documents from polling stations to secure storage locations. This meticulous process ensures scrutiny and verification during the counting phase.
