Former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala has reached out to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, urging an immediate floor test following the withdrawal of support by three Independent legislators from the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Chautala also called for the imposition of President's Rule in the state amidst the ongoing political upheaval.

Background of the Political Shift

The current government took shape in March after the BJP terminated its alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), helmed by Chautala. Nayab Singh Saini assumed leadership after Manohar Lal Khattar resigned and entered the fray for the Karnal parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Notably, the JJP has abstained from backing the Saini-led BJP administration.

In a written appeal to the Governor on Wednesday, Chautala highlighted the JJP's willingness to extend support to any other political entity for government formation in the state.

Current Legislative Composition and Altered Dynamics

The Haryana legislative assembly, consisting of 90 seats, currently operates with an effective strength of 88 members. The BJP holds 40 seats, the Congress 30, and the JJP 10. Additionally, there is representation from the Indian National Lok Dal and the Haryana Lokhit Party, each with one seat, alongside six Independent legislators.

Chautala underscored recent events wherein three of the six Independent MLAs, who had earlier backed the government in March, retracted their support. This development, coupled with the JJP's stance, indicates a potential shift in the assembly's majority dynamics.

Demand for Immediate Action and Presidential Intervention

Expressing urgency, Chautala insisted on a prompt floor test to ascertain the government's majority in the assembly. In case of failure to prove majority, he urged Governor Dattatreya to invoke President's Rule in Haryana as mandated by constitutional protocols.

Political Landscape and Upcoming Elections

The political landscape has seen swift alterations, with Independent MLAs Sombir Sangwan (Dadri), Randhir Singh Gollen (Pundri), and Dharampal Gonder (Nilokheri) withdrawing support from the BJP government and aligning with the Congress.

Contrary to Chautala's concerns, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed confidence in his government's stability, dismissing any imminent threat. Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress responded to Chautala's overture, suggesting a formal communication to the Governor regarding the government's minority status. These developments unfold against the backdrop of impending Lok Sabha elections on May 25 and the subsequent Assembly polls in October.
