Mumbai: Asha Bhosle, a well-known voice of the Indian music world, is no more with us. At the age of 92, she breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. With her demise, an important chapter of that era of Hindi cinema, in which voice was the sole identity, seems to be ending.
In a career spanning more than seven decades, she reinvented herself again and again. Sung new types of songs in every era and worked in different languages. This was the reason why her name remained constant.
Her work with RD Burman still holds a distinct identity. Songs like “Dum Maaro Dum” or “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” were not just hits, they gave a new direction to the music of that time.
With time, their relationship extended to their personal lives and they got married in 1980. This partnership was not limited to just music, but a deep emotional connection towards each other was also clearly visible. Asha Bhosle said on many occasions that the relationship between her and R. D. Burman was not limited to music alone; there was also an affinity for it.
Initially she used to call him by his famous name ‘Pancham’, but with time, she started calling him by her own unique name. After one song, Pancham Da started calling her 'Babua', which was later shortened to 'Bab'. However, the interesting thing was that in private moments this closeness was clearly visible, but in front of others he would always call her by her name.
She also admitted that after Pancham Da's demise, singing on stage was not the same as before. According to her, being with him in the studio gave a different kind of confidence, but without him at times emotions would take over. Despite these challenges, even during the difficult times of her career, Asha Bhosle always stood by him and did not leave him.
She never limited herself to one type of song. From classical to pop, she worked everywhere. This was her biggest strength.
Her songs are heard even today. The new generation also listens to him, which happens with fewer artists. Her voice did not disappear with time.
This is being seen as a big void in the music world. She was among those voices that were not only heard but also felt.
The songs sung by her will keep coming back again and again. In the movies, on the radio, and even through new technology. Perhaps this is the biggest identity of an artist.
Reactions are continuously coming in from the film and music world. Many artists called her their inspiration and shared their memories with her. Her songs are also being shared on social media, showing that she affected both the industry and the average listener.
