Chennai: Rumours are swirling around 'Jana Nayagan', the much-anticipated Tamil film starring Thalapathy Vijay, about whether it is a remake of the Telugu hit 'Bhagavanth Kesari'.

Social media has been ablaze with comparisons ever since the trailer debuted. Many fans online pointed to similarities in character arcs and big-screen moments, fuelling talk that the Tamil film might be more than just inspired. 

What the director says, remake or not?

Filmmaker H. Vinoth, who directed 'Jana Nayagan', addressed the rumours at recent promotions and events. He avoided a straight answer. Vinoth said the film should be seen as a "Thalapathy Vijay film" and urged audiences not to judge based on trailers alone.

He stressed that comparisons from promotional clips don’t tell the full story, and that viewers will only know the true connection, if any, once the film releases. 

What others in the industry are saying?

Across the industry, voices are cautious. 'Bhagavanth Kesari' director Anil Ravipudi has also weighed in, saying only a full viewing after release will clarify how close the films really are. 

Despite the chatter, neither the 'Jana Nayagan' makers nor rights holders have officially confirmed a straight remake. Reports suggest some thematic rights might have been secured for specific scenes, but this stops short of calling the entire film a shot-for-shot adaptation.

What's next before the film opens?

'Jana Nayagan' is set to hit theatres on January 9, during the Pongal weekend. This release date makes it one of the biggest Tamil films of the season and because it’s being positioned as Vijay’s potential last film before a full-time move into politics, expectations are high. 

Besides Vijay, the film features Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol in lead roles. Bobby  is playing the villain.
