'I'm ready to quit as President...', says Zelensky (AI/TIN)
Ukraine President Zelensky says ready to quit: In a significant announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he is ready to leave the office but only after the war with Russia ends. He continued to add that his goal is to end the war with Russia, and not to continue the run for presidency. He further added that he would urge his country's parliament to schedule the elections if possible.
Zelensky, in an interview with Axios, said he is "ready" to step down when he will notice that his job is finished after the war with Russia ends. He was quoted as saying, "My goal is to finish the war, not to continue to run for office.''
It is worthy to be mentioned here that due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, elections have been postponed for an indefinite period. Notably, as per the Ukrainian constitution, an election can not be held when Martial Law is declared in the country. And Ukraine has been under Martial law since February 2022.
As per the president, although the current situation in the country is not safe, but elections can be conducted if possible.
Further in the interview, Zelensky, added that he also discussed about the election during his meet with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (September 23) and stated that if there's a ceasefire, "we can use this period of time, and I can give this signal to the parliament."
He continued to add that he understands people may want "a leader with ... a new mandate" for a long-term peace.
Notably, Zelensky became the President of Ukraine in 2019 and his term was scheduled to end in 2024 itself. He further added, "During the ceasefire, I think security can give the possibility to have elections. It can be so."
