New Delhi: US President Donald Trump, while talking about rising gas prices and the Iran war, made remarks about Los Angeles and San Diego that are drawing sharp criticism.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was among the first to criticize Trump's remarks, calling him a lunatic for making such controversial statements.

'Let Los Angeles and San Diego finish it off'

"It's all made up because of the war. The price is a little high. It's a small price to pay, let them destroy Los Angeles and San Diego. It's a very small price to pay," Trump said during an address in Nebraska on October 5, ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump made the remarks in a state where farmers and truck drivers are troubled by high fuel prices and inflation has impacted the rural economy.

Trump's statement drew strong criticism

"After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should overrun Los Angeles and San Diego. He is insane and dangerous," California Governor Gavin Newsom said.

Another Trump critic said, "An American president says let Iran destroy Los Angeles and San Diego. How low will he stoop?"

Another critic said, "When Trump imagines Los Angeles and San Diego being wiped out by a nuclear attack, the crowd starts clapping. What nonsense is this? This is not normal."

Another person warned people, reacting to Trump's remarks, "If you live in Southern California, leave immediately. President Trump says Iran taking over Los Angeles and San Diego is a small price to pay."

Another person said, 'Trump is telling Iran that it's okay to destroy Los Angeles or San Diego.'
