5.4-Magnitude Earthquake strikes off Egypt; Authorities Launch Emergency Response (X)

Cairo: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude hit off Egypt on Monday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said. GFZ reported the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km (6 miles). The institute said it has received no reports ofcasualties or damage.

When and where did the earthquake strike?

An earthquake shook Egypt this morning. The magnitude of the earthquake was around 5.4 on Richter scale, as the GFZ has reported. The tremors of the earthquake were felt around 12 midnight last night, GFZ said.

People woke up from their sleep all across several provinces in Egypt due to the sudden shake. The GFZ said, the depth of the earthquake is 10 kilometers (6 miles).

What did officials say?

Egyptian officials claimed, the origin point of the earthquake was 38 kilometers away from the city of Suez. At first the epicenter of the quake has been reported by the GFZ as close to the Suez, Egypt, although the epicenter according to EMSC was just about 29 km to the northwest of Suez.

Though the earthquake initiated in Egypt, the tremors of it felt in various countries. Apart from in Cairo, Giza and the several Egyptian provinces, the Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon as well as parts of Cyprus felt the earthquake right away.

What about the emergency response?

The Egyptian Red Crescent reportedly activated emergency reaction in quake hit zones. Even after so many hours, there hasn't been a single casualty or damage in the affected regions of Egypt.

The Red Cross authorities has advised citizens against going too near to old and damaged buildings. Authority has cautioned people of Egypt not to put trust on any news apart from that reported from the authorized sources and advised to refrain from spreading rumor.
