Muzaffarnagar: A police operation in Muzaffarnagar following a theft at the residence of senior BJP leader Jai Bhagwan Sharma led to an encounter on Monday. One suspected burglar was injured in retaliatory police firing and arrested, while his alleged accomplice managed to escape.

Police recovered a stolen gas cylinder, a country-made firearm, ammunition and a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime. The arrested suspect has been identified as Nawab Haider, while teams are searching for the second accused, Aftab.

Theft Reported in Bachchan Singh Colony

The theft took place at Sharma's house in Lane No. 8 of Bachchan Singh Colony, under the jurisdiction of New Mandi police station. On October 30, his son, Rishabh Dev Sharma, lodged a complaint alleging that cash, two gas cylinders and other household belongings had been stolen from the locked house.

Police registered a case and began searching for those involved in the incident.

How Did the Encounter Unfold?

According to New Mandi Circle Officer Raju Kumar Saw, a police team was checking vehicles near Platinum Resort on Pachenda Road when it spotted two suspicious men travelling on a motorcycle without a number plate. A gas cylinder was placed between the riders.

When officers signalled them to stop, the suspects allegedly attempted to flee. During the chase, they abandoned the motorcycle and cylinder before entering a sugarcane field.

Police said the suspects were asked to surrender, but allegedly opened fire at the team. Officers returned fire, injuring one of the suspects, while the other escaped.

Arrested Suspect Identified, Accomplice Still Missing

The injured suspect was identified as Nawab Haider, son of Chand Miyan alias Hasan, a resident of Nyazupura under Kotwali Nagar police station. His alleged accomplice, Aftab, son of Dilshad and also a resident of Nyazupura, remains at large.

During questioning, Haider allegedly admitted that he and Aftab had broken into Jai Bhagwan Sharma's locked house on the night of October 29-30. He reportedly identified the recovered gas cylinder as property stolen from the same residence.

Police further stated that the motorcycle had allegedly been stolen from Dehradun around a month ago and was being used in theft-related activities. The accused also reportedly told investigators that the remaining stolen belongings had already been sold.

What Did Police Recover From the Spot?

The recovery included a .315-bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge, one empty cartridge, the gas cylinder, an unregistered Hero HF Deluxe motorcycle and a bag containing tools allegedly used in burglaries.

According to police, several cases involving theft, burglary, violations of the Arms Act and other offences are already registered against Haider in Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur.

Police teams are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the second suspect.
