Bangladesh To Ramp Up Defence Ties With Pakistan With Air Force Chief's Islamabad Visit

Dhaka: In a major move to boost military co-operation with Pakistan, Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan will lead a six-member team of officers for a six-day visit to Islamabad beginning January 4.

This is a continuation of the deepening of relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh since August 2024.

What is the significance of this visit?

The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) chief’s visit to Pakistan will take start a mere four days after India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Dhaka of to attend the funeral of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. This is the first visit of a Bangladesh military chief to Pakistan since the 1971 liberation war.

Who will accompany the BAF chief?

According to media reports, ACM Khan will be accompanied by his spouse Saleha Khan. Air Commodore Mohammad Kamrul Islam, Group Captain Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman and two flight lieutenants will be the military officers who will be a part of the contingent accompanying the BAF chief during the visit which will take place between January 4 and 9. 

The visit comes at a time when the BAF is trying to acquire 20 Chinese-made J-10C and at least ten Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. A Letter of Intent (LOI) with Italy’s Leonardo was signed in December 2025 for potential purchase of these military assets. Bangladesh is also expected to acquire six T129 ATAK attack helicopters which are manufactured by Turkiye.
