Canadian authorities have made arrests in connection with the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, according to reports. The alleged hit squad, suspected of being tasked by the Indian government, has been apprehended following extensive investigations.

Tensions between India and Canada escalated last year when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted at possible Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing. Trudeau's remarks further strained diplomatic ties between the two nations.

According to sources close to the investigation, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that the police are also probing potential connections to three other murders in Canada, including the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton.

Alleged hit squad members

The suspects, believed to be part of the hit squad, reportedly played various roles, including shooters, drivers, and spotters, during Nijjar's assassination at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.

The arrests were made during coordinated police operations across multiple provinces. Investigators had been closely monitoring the alleged hit squad members for months before taking action.

Government response

India rejected Trudeau's recent remarks, emphasizing concerns over Canada's tolerance of separatist ideologies. The Indian government has consistently highlighted the detrimental impact of such sentiments on bilateral relations and domestic security.

Trudeau's comments, made during a Khalsa Day event, reiterated his stance on the Nijjar case and emphasized the need to address issues of violence and extremism.

Diplomatic fallout

In response to Trudeau's allegations last year, India temporarily suspended visa issuance to Canadian citizens and requested a reduction in Canada's diplomatic presence. Subsequently, Canada withdrew a significant number of diplomats from India.

India continues to express reservations about Canada's handling of separatist elements, stressing the importance of addressing such issues for the mutual benefit of both nations.
