Washington: US President Donald Trump has sent shockwaves around the world with his arbitrary decisions during his second term. He has also imposed tariffs on several countries. However, Trump is expected to face a big test with the US Supreme Court set to rule on the validity of these tarriffs.
What will the US Supreme Court decide?
The issue of Trump's tariffs has reached the US Supreme Court. A major decision on the validity of the tariffs is expected on Friday night, January 9th. Not only the US, but most countries around the world are watching this closely.
The court will decide whether the Trump administration has the authority to impose such heavy tariffs under the IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act). If not, will the government have to refund the money to importers? If this happens, they may have to pay billions of dollars in refunds. It is estimated that this amount could be between $100–150 billion (approximately 8–12 trillion rupees). This could cause significant damage to the US treasury.
However, experts believe that the US Supreme Court's decision will not be an all-or-nothing outcome. This means that neither full authority will be granted, nor will all authority be taken away. Instead, a middle ground might be found.
It is also being reported that President Trump's team has already started preparing to explore alternative options. According to sources, if the decision goes against them, they will try to keep the tariffs in place in some way through other laws and provisions.
The Decision is also Important for India
This decision of the US Supreme Court will also be important for India. This is because Trump's 50% tariff has affected Indian exports and markets. Amidst a tariff dispute, India and the US have been negotiating a trade deal for months, but it has not yet been finalized. Recently, the US president even threatened to further increase tariffs if India does not stop buying oil from Russia.
