Ceasefire Ends, Russia Pounds Ukraine Again; Kyiv Residential Building Hit

Kyiv: As the three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine ended, Moscow launched a drone attack on a residential building in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Local officials said that the Russian military resumed its attacks on Kyiv on the night of Tuesday.

When did the attack happen?

This new attack on the Ukrainian capital comes just hours after the expiration of a three-day truce by the US between Ukraine and Russia.

The exact extent of the damage is not yet known. However, local media reports suggested that these attacks were typical of Russia's regular attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure.

What was the scale of attack?

During the ceasefire, there were no large-scale airstrikes, although the Ukrainian Air Force reported Russian drone launches and the firing of an Iskander-M ballistic missile from occupied Crimea.

After months of disruption to Russia-Ukraine peace talks amid the Iran war, reports suggest the US is once again trying to broker a temporary ceasefire deal between Ukraine and Russia in exchange for sanctions relief for Moscow.

Why did a ceasefire happen between Russia and Ukraine?

A temporary three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine was largely brokered by US President Donald Trump and coincided with Russia's Victory Day celebrations (May 9-11). During this period, 1,000 prisoners of war were reportedly exchanged between the two countries. This ceasefire provided both sides with a military respite and a brief pause for diplomatic negotiations.
