New Delhi: The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of appointing former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as United Nations (UN) Secretary-General. According to reports, Orban's name has repeatedly surfaced in discussions among US officials regarding the next UN Secretary-General. US officials have also presented the idea of a leader like Orban to representatives from China and Russia, and both countries have reportedly received positive responses.
According to reports, the US has encouraged Viktor Orban to run for the post. Furthermore, discussions have emerged regarding support from Russia and China. If this happens, the race to elect the next UN chief could take a new turn. However, neither Orban has announced his candidacy, nor has the US, Russia, or China officially announced their support.
The term of the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, ends on December 31st. A consensus on his replacement has not yet been reached. Six unofficial votes have been held on candidates for the UN Security Council, but none received sufficient support. In the most recent vote, held on October 16, Costa Rica's Rebecca Grynspan emerged as the frontrunner, with nine members supporting her, while six voted against her. Meanwhile, Lana Nusseibeh of the United Arab Emirates has also entered the race for Secretary-General. Viktor Orban's name is also being considered, but an announcement is awaited.
A Wall Street Journal report, citing sources, stated that the plan is to present him as a joint candidate between the US, Russia, and China. According to the report, the idea to put forward Orban's name came from US officials. During discussions on potential candidates for the UN Secretary-General, they suggested a leader like Orban, a proposal that was also agreed upon by Chinese and Russian officials.
US officials estimate that Orban could garner substantial support in the UN Security Council, with eight to ten votes in favor in the 15-member council. However, Britain and France could block the appointment, as both countries have veto power.
According to the report, US officials spoke with Orban to determine whether he would be willing to run for the position. It has been reported that Orban may be willing to do so, but will only move forward with his candidacy if he sees a strong chance of winning. 63-year-old Viktor Orban served as Prime Minister of Hungary for 16 consecutive years, from 2010 to 2026. Viktor is also known as a dictator. However, in the April 2026 elections, his party, Fidesz, lost to Peter Magyar's Tisza Party, which secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Following this, Peter Magyar was sworn in as Prime Minister in May.
