Dmitry Medvedev
International News: Amid the growing tension between Russia and America, one name has suddenly come into the limelight: Dmitry Medvedev. Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Medvedev recently made a statement that America considered a direct nuclear threat.
The result was that US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russia. Now the world is scared because both nuclear powers are openly warning each other.
Last week, US President Donald Trump warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin did not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, the US would impose even tougher sanctions on Russia. Trump called it a ceasefire-or-sanctions deadline. In response, Medvedev reminded the US of Russia's infamous nuclear system Dead Hand, a system that automatically launches a nuclear retaliatory strike if Russia is attacked first.
Trump considered this statement a serious threat and ordered the deployment of nuclear submarines near Russia. He called Medvedev a failed president and warned him that he was treading on "dangerous ground."
He was the president of Russia from 2008 to 2012. At that time Vladimir Putin could not become the president due to the constitution, so he put forward Medvedev. Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). He is a lawyer by profession. He has been close to Putin since the 1990s. Before becoming president, he held important positions like chairman of Gazprom, deputy prime minister, and chief of staff.
While being president, he took peaceful steps like the New START nuclear treaty and police reform. He was the Prime Minister of Russia till 2020; now he is the Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council, but his actual power is considered limited.
While he was the president, Medvedev was considered a liberal and progressive face, but after the Ukraine war started in 2022, his character completely changed. Now he constantly gives indirect threats of nuclear attack to Western countries and taunts American and European leaders on social media. Experts believe that this series of statements is an attempt to maintain his hold among Putin and Russian nationalists.
