Washington: In America, the administration of President Donald Trump has taken a major decision and announced the abolition of the rule in which conservation on public lands was given equal importance to development works. This rule was implemented during the tenure of former President Joe Biden.
The purpose of this rule, implemented in 2024, was to change the priorities of the US Bureau of Land Management. This agency oversees about 10 percent of America's land. Under the rules, just as land was given on lease to oil companies for drilling, similarly a system was made to lease land for conservation and restoration.
US Home Secretary Doug Burgum says that due to this rule, activities like energy, mining, timber production and animal husbandry could have been affected on millions of acres of land. They claim that this would have halted development in many areas and affected local businesses.
The Trump administration believes that public lands should be used more for energy production and economic activities.
Environmental groups and conservation advocates say conservation has been ignored in the use of government lands for too long. According to him, this rule was an important step towards maintaining environmental balance and reclamation of degraded lands.
They also say that conservation is also part of the responsibilities of government agencies under the Federal Lands Policy Management Act of 1976.
Organisations related to energy and industry had opposed this rule from the beginning. He said that this was creating unnecessary restrictions on the use of land. Republican leaders also criticised it, calling it a “non-use policy".
According to him, government lands should be used for multiple purposes like oil, gas, mining and grazing, and not just for conservation.
Most of America's government lands are located in western states such as Alaska, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The Trump administration has already taken several steps to increase fossil fuel production in these areas.
In recent months, Republican leaders have also repealed some land conservation rules enacted during the Biden administration in Alaska, Montana and North Dakota.
