Washington: Only a day after sending a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister threatening war if he is not given the Nobel Peace Prize, US President Donald Trump has changed his stance on the issue, claiming that he is not interested in the prestigious global award any more.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had sent a belligerent message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. He wrote that since he was not given the Nobel Prize, peace is no longer a priority for him. Trump told Norway to tell Denmark to hand over Greenland to the United States. It's worth noting that the Nobel Peace Prize winner is announced in Oslo, the capital of Norway.
"Given that your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing more than eight wars, I no longer feel any obligation to think about peace at all," Trump wrote.
Donald Trump then turned his attention to Greenland and, in the same breath, threatened Norway. In his message, he said that if Russia or China attacked Greenland, Denmark would not be able to defend it. Donald Trump compared his record to Barack Obama's 2009 award. Trump claimed that he alone had rebuilt a deterrent force that Beijing and Moscow respect. It's worth noting that Trump repeatedly talks about preventing eight wars around the world, including the conflict between India and Pakistan in May of last year.
Donald Trump's message is being seen as a threat to Norway. Norway has stated that it would defend Greenland and has even mentioned deploying its military. Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the tariff blackmail issued by Donald Trump's on Sunday.
Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tax on goods from France, Germany, the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Finland starting February 1. If the Greenland deal doesn't go through, the tariffs on these countries will increase to 25% from June 1. On Monday morning, he reiterated NATO's 20-year-old warning to Denmark regarding Russian threats in the region.
The controversy over Greenland has escalated significantly. While many NATO countries remain silent, some have taken a firm stance against Trump's Greenland plan. European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finland's Alexander Stubb, have sided with Denmark and emphasized NATO's commitments in the Arctic without any economic pressure. According to recent reports, Denmark and Norway are preparing a joint response and may issue a joint statement. Meanwhile, as the deadline for tariffs approaches, diplomats in Brussels are discussing retaliatory measures.
