New Delhi: Tremors felt in India, China, Bangladesh, Nepal as earthquake of magnitude 5.6 hits Bhutan. Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Bhutan on Sunday night. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6. The depth of the earthquake was reported to be 10 kilometers.
The earthquake's epicenter was located in Punakha, Bhutan, situated north of West Bengal. Tremors were also felt in North Bengal, parts of the Northeast, and Bangladesh. Many internet users shared information about the tremors on social media. There are currently no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 22.5 kilometers, and tremors were felt in Kangra, Chamba, and surrounding districts. People reported feeling strong vibrations, prompting many residents to step out of their homes as a precaution. Officials noted that seismic activity in the region had begun earlier in the day. They stated that a mild earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 was recorded at 8:52 AM near the Minkiani Pass in the Dhauladhar mountain range, approximately 16 kilometers from Dharamshala. They added that the intensity was so low that most people did not feel it.
Earthquake tremors have been felt in West Bengal. Tremors were experienced in Siliguri and Cooch Behar. The earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. According to initial estimates, the epicenter was located 5 kilometers from Punakha in Bhutan. The tremors were felt around 11:06 PM on Sunday, causing a stir across the entire North Bengal region, including Cooch Behar and Alipurduar. Tremors were also felt in Bangladesh, Nepal, and China.
North Bengal districts have been experiencing continuous rainfall since Sunday evening. Consequently, the sudden earthquake naturally caused panic. Many locals rushed out of their homes in fear. A Siliguri resident said, "I received an earthquake alert on my mobile phone just moments before. Immediately after, the house started shaking. I ran outside out of fear." However, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
Earlier on Saturday, multiple earthquake tremors were felt in the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh. These included a significant tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. Officials stated that seismic activity was recorded in the area on June 5, with the strongest tremor occurring at 10:04 PM. They reported that the epicenter was located approximately 40 kilometers from Dharamshala, between Dhar Ghadoi and RF Kugti on the Kangra-Chamba border within the Dhauladhar mountain range.
