Earthquake in the Philippines (X)
Earthquake in the Philippines: The earth has once again shaken strongly in the Philippines. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Mindanao region early Friday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremor was recorded at 7:03 am (4:33 am IST).
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 90 kilometers below the ground. It is a matter of relief that till now there is no news of anyone being injured or killed. Local teams are reaching the spot and taking stock of the situation, and aftershocks are being monitored.
The quake came just days after a quake that shook the southern Philippines on October 10. Then there was a strong earthquake of 7.4 magnitude, in which seven people died. Buildings of several schools and a hospital were damaged, and electricity was lost in many areas.
A tsunami warning was also issued at that time, which was later lifted. As a precaution, people from coastal areas were sent to safe places.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 62 kilometers. Davao City, which has a population of about 5.4 million, was hardest hit. Schools were evacuated, and tsunami warnings were also given.
The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is considered the most active seismic area in the world. For this reason, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur here. The country has faced such strong shocks several times in the last few weeks.
