Washington: US President Donald Trump recently presented a major 28-point peace proposal to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. This plan sparked a new debate in international politics. Now in response to the same, European countries have released their 28-point alternative peace plan on Sunday. This resolution clearly rejects many of America's controversial suggestions and states that the foundation of any solution should be laid on Ukraine's sovereignty and rights.
The US plan expected Ukraine to cede some territory to Russia, limit its military capabilities, and refrain from taking action against Moscow in cases involving war crimes. Many allied countries found this draft shocking and immediately made public their own separate plans.
The European proposal rejects these concessions entirely and instead offers a framework that is consistent with Ukraine's sovereignty. The proposal states that regional talks can begin only after the ceasefire and that too on the basis of the existing frontline and not on agreed land transfers. This is in sharp contrast to the US draft, which called for Ukraine to withdraw from some cities in eastern Donbass.
The biggest difference of opinion over the US proposal is over Ukraine's future NATO membership. The US draft indicated stopping it, while the European plan does not rule it out. The document from European countries simply says that no consensus has yet been reached among the allies on this issue. This means that the door to NATO has not been closed.
In America's plan, Ukraine was allowed to have a maximum of 6 lakh soldiers. Europe also considers this inadequate and in its peace plan has suggested allowing Ukraine to have a peacetime army of up to 8 lakh soldiers.
The European proposal calls for placing the Zaporozhye nuclear plant under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and dividing its production equally between Russia and Ukraine. This suggestion is considered to be quite balanced compared to America's plan.
The US proposal also faced sharp criticism at the G20 summit held in South Africa on Saturday. Several European leaders said the plan was incomplete and needed “much additional work.” These two different proposals from Europe and America have indicated to the world that the solution to the Russia-Ukraine war will not be found through just one document, but only through international consensus.
