Explained: The Abraham Accords and Why Does Trump Want Iran to be Part of It? (AI)

The Abraham Accords: In the latest move, the US President Donald Trump said that he believes Iran could join the Abraham Accords. Notably, Abraham Accords is a peace agreement which was signed during Trump's first term in office. Under this deal Israel normalized diplomatic relations with four Muslim-majority nations.

During the press conference held at the White House, President Trump who was present with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said, "Who knows, maybe even Iran can get in there." He continued to add, "I think they're going to be open to it. I really believe that. But they could be a member."

All about Abraham Accords

For the unknown, Abraham Accords is a set of agreements that establishes diplomatic normalization between Israel and several other states. It is the signature achievement of Trump’s first term, signed in 2020. It is worthy to be mention here that UAE and Bahrain were the first to sign the agreement, and later Morocco and Sudan were the next to sign it. 

Interestingly, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, played a prominent role in getting this deal done. His this move was labeled in Washington and Jerusalem as a breakthrough achievement. 

However, from the starting itself, the Palestinian leaders, condemned the agreements. They consider it as a betrayal. 

Accords in Future

After signing the, Abraham Accords, the former US President, Joe Biden and the current President Donald Trump, have left no stone unturned to build on the accords’ momentum. With this move, the US authorities hopes that economic cooperation between Israel and Arab partners could ease the normalization across the region.

However, Saudi Arabia has opposed this idea of normalising relations with Israel till the Palestinian statehood is recognised.

Notably, the 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and the unfortunate war in Gaza have worsen the matter. The war lead to the killing of thousands of Palestinians, further impacting their relations with Israel.
