This much-awaited system will be developed by the famous American defense company Lockheed Martin. This system will be able to provide protection from any hostile attack on US land, sky, and space.

'Golden Dome' is a next-generation hybrid missile defense system, which will be able to detect, track, and neutralize the ground together. This technology will not only provide protection from traditional missile attacks but will also destroy cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles; drones; and even nuclear weapons before they reach the US border.

What is special about the name?

Although the name of this system seems to be inspired by 'Golden Dome,' Israel's 'Iron Dome' security system, defense experts claim that it is more advanced and multi-dimensional than Iron Dome in technology and scope.

When and how was the plan made?

The project was announced by Trump in January after his second term. This system is targeted to be commissioned by 2029. Initially a budget of $25 billion was proposed for this, which was implemented under the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' law. But experts believe that its total cost can go up to $175 billion.

In addition to Lockheed Martin, 180 companies interested

The US Défense Department Pentagon received the expression of interest from more than 180 defence companies for the Golden Dome project but finally assigned the major responsibility to Lockheed Martin.

This ambitious defense system will be developed under the supervision of US Space Force General Michael Gutleen, who has three decades of experience in missile defense and space operations.

Why is this system necessary?

According to the missile defense review report published in 2022, the US is at serious risk of missile attacks from Russia and China.
