Washington: US President Donald Trump had invited India to join the “Board of Peace” being formed for Gaza. This initiative came as part of the second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This proposal was put forward at a time when Gaza is going through massive destruction and efforts have intensified at the international level to create a new system for governance, reconstruction and economic assistance.

What is this “Board of Peace” after all?

According to the US administration, this will be an international platform that will help in setting up an administrative structure in Gaza, rebuilding infrastructure, mobilizing investment and establishing a stable governance system. Trump has called this a big step towards establishing long-term peace in West Asia.

Why is India being included in this?

Experts say that India's global reputation, balanced diplomacy and experience in development projects are considered important for this initiative. India has already played a role in reconstruction and institutional development in many conflict-affected areas, due to which it is seen as a reliable partner.

Which other countries have been invited?

Many big countries and organizations have been invited to join this board. Among these, the names of the top leadership of Turkey, Egypt, France, Germany, Australia, Canada and the European Commission have emerged. Pakistan has also received a proposal to join this forum, which has been confirmed by the Foreign Office there.

How have the board's composition and expenses been decided?

According to media reports, in the draft document sent to some countries, it has been said that members who want to remain a part of the board for more than three years will have to make a fixed financial contribution. This amount will be spent on administrative structures and development projects in Gaza.

Who will be its main faces?

The US President has also announced a working group for this initiative, which includes many big names associated with the US and international institutions. These include leaders like America's Secretary of State, Special Envoy for the Middle East, World Bank chief and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Apart from this, Trump's close associates will also be a part of this group.

What impact could this have on the future of Gaza?

Experts believe that if this board works in an active and impartial manner, it can help in bringing administrative stability in Gaza and speeding up the reconstruction process. However, some experts are cautious about this and say that without ground conditions and political consensus, the impact of any international structure can be limited.
