Washington: The long-running bilateral trade deal negotiations between India and America have now reached the final stage. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore said that most of the agreement has been completed and now only 1 to 2 per cent of legal and technical issues remain to be agreed upon. He expressed confidence that both the countries can finalise this agreement soon.
Speaking at the IX US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit 2026, US Ambassador Sergio Gore said that the talks that have been going on for almost one and a half years are now at their final stage. He said that most of the draft of the agreement is ready and both sides are trying to reach consensus only on some selected issues.
According to Gore, the timeline for negotiations was briefly affected due to recent judicial intervention. However, after the visit of US Trade Representative Jamieson Lee Greer to New Delhi last week, the talks gained momentum again and now the agreement is close to completion.
Sergio Gore said that US President Donald Trump is in favour of a strong and beneficial partnership with India for both the countries. He said that Trump attaches great importance to his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and still fondly remembers his past visits to India.
The US ambassador said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Trump to visit India. He expressed hope that President Trump will visit India when the appropriate time comes. He also said that there is a possibility of the two leaders meeting during the upcoming international programmes of Prime Minister Modi.
Sergio Gore said that the US Mission in India has played an important role in promoting approximately 20.5 billion dollars of new investments in the US this year. He called this a proof of the strong economic relations between the two countries.
The US Ambassador said that a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Quad countries is proposed in the Philippines after about two weeks. Maritime security, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and common strategic issues will be discussed in this meeting. He said that work is being done to make Quad cooperation regular and more effective.
