Tehran: Amidst the ongoing tension between Iran, Israel and America, the Strait of Hormuz has now become the center of a new dispute. There are reports that Iran is extorting huge sums of money from some merchant ships passing through this important sea route. Due to this, the impact on global trade and oil supply is clearly visible.

Are 2 million dollars really being recovered from the ships?

According to a report, an Iranian MP has claimed that up to 2 million dollars is being taken in exchange for passage of some ships. He described this as a way to show the expenses of the war and his control.
Although official confirmation of this claim has not been revealed yet, it has definitely increased the concern among the shipping companies.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz so important?

It is one of the most important sea routes in the world, through which about 20 percent of the oil and gas supply passes. Movement here has almost come to a standstill since the beginning of March, which is having a direct impact on oil prices in the international market.

Is Iran blocking all ships?

According to the latest information, Iran is not blocking the route completely but is stopping only selected ships. Iranian officials say that only ships belonging to countries they consider hostile to them are being stopped. Interestingly, some Indian ships have been allowed to pass through this route, while there are reports of ships from other countries being stopped.

Could the situation get worse?

The tension increased further when America gave Iran an ultimatum of 48 hours to completely open this route.
In response, Iran made it clear that if its power plant or other structures were attacked, it could target important targets in the entire region. Iran's Revolutionary Guards even said that if the situation worsens, Hormuz will be completely closed.

Is maritime traffic being affected?

After Iran's warnings, the movement of ships on this route has reduced significantly. Many companies are stopping their ships or looking for alternative routes to avoid the risk. Meanwhile, in an incident, explosive-laden boats targeted two oil tankers, resulting in the death of an Indian crew member. This incident has further increased the seriousness of the situation.

What are the further indications?

The way the situation is developing, it is clear that Hormuz is no longer just a sea route but has become the most important front of this war. If tension increases further, its impact will not be limited to just the region, but will affect the economy of the entire world.
