Iran Denies Breakthrough in US Talks as Trump Signals Deal Is Close (Image Courtesy: Wikipedia Commons)
Tehran: US President Donald Trump claimed on social media that an agreement with Iran will be reached soon. But Tehran rejected this claim outright on Saturday. Iran clearly said, "No final deal has been reached. We will not take any decision under external pressure."
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said on state TV, "Tehran had said goodbye to the language of 'must' 47 years ago. No western country can talk to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the language of 'must'. We will take our own decisions after considering the interests and rights of the Iranian people."
Trump wrote, "Our wonderful and unprecedented naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is now being lifted. The ships stranded there should now prepare to return home. Say hello to your wife, husband, parents and family from me, your favourite President." Also claimed that the decision on the agreement with Iran will be taken soon.
Baghai described the US blockade as "illegal from the beginning". They allege that this step broke the ceasefire that came into effect on April 8. Also violated international rules of freedom of sea.
He said, "It has to be seen whether America actually follows through on its words or if it's just propaganda. Even if the blockade is lifted, it will be ending a task which should not have happened."
According to Iranian officials, after the war started on February 28, Iran had tightened surveillance in Hormuz. The US had taken action against Iranian ships and ports. In response, Tehran also took steps.
Baghai says that Washington went against the terms of the ceasefire and took some steps unilaterally. America itself prolonged the blockade. Tehran considers this a violation of the ceasefire.
Baghai said that talks are going on between Iran and America through intermediaries. The discussion is on three issues: ending the war, resolving maritime issues and finding a solution to Iranian assets stuck abroad.
On the most important question, Baghai said bluntly, "We are not having any talks on the nuclear issue." At present, it is clear from Trump's claim and Iran's denial that a deal is still far away. Whether the blockade in Hormuz will be lifted or not will be known in the next few days.
