Tehran: Apprehensions regarding a renewed escalation of the ongoing conflict in West Asia have deepened once again. Following the recent tensions between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a stern warning, stating that the Iranian Navy stands ready to inflict another crushing defeat upon its adversaries. Khamenei's warning comes at a time when reports have recently surfaced regarding an incident of gunfire directed at a vessel traversing the Strait of Hormuz.
On the occasion of Iran's Army Day, the Supreme Leader issued a message containing an unequivocal warning to the nation's enemies. "Iran's valiant Navy is prepared to deal a fresh, crushing blow to its enemies," Khamenei declared. Furthermore, he lauded the armed forces of the Islamic Republic for their steadfastness in confronting the U.S. military.
It is worth noting that just yesterday, Iran had announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed this development and even conveyed a message of appreciation. However, in a subsequent statement, Trump categorically refused to lift the U.S. blockade currently in effect on the eastern side of the strait. Consequently, relations between the two sides deteriorated once again. Trump maintains that the U.S. blockade will remain in place until a consensus is reached on a peace agreement with Iran. Conversely, accusing the United States of reneging on its promises, Iran has announced the immediate closure of the Strait of Hormuz once more.
On Saturday morning, Iran's military command stated that the United States had refused to lift the blockade imposed against Iranian ports. As a result, the restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz have reverted to their previous status. Subsequently, the Iranian Navy broadcast radio messages to commercial vessels traversing the strait, formally declaring the waterway closed. An Indian vessel had also proceeded to exit the Strait of Hormuz but was compelled to execute a U-turn following the directive issued by the Iranian Navy.
Following an announcement by the Iranian military—once again threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz—20 vessels attempting to cross the waterway have been diverted toward Oman. UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that it had recorded an incident involving gunfire near the Strait, northeast of Oman; however, according to Sky News, the tanker and its crew remain safe. According to tracking data from the MarineTraffic platform, the convoy that had formed has since dispersed.
