Washington: US President Donald Trump has made a bold claim regarding the Middle East conflict, saying that the ongoing war against Iran could end soon. He stated in an interview that there is now "almost nothing left to target" in Iran, making the conflict likely to end quickly. Speaking to the American news website Axios, Trump indicated that Iran's military capabilities have been severely damaged by repeated attacks by US and allied forces. He also stated that he would end the war "whenever he wants".
According to Trump, recent operations have targeted several key Iranian military bases, missile launchers, and military infrastructure. He stated that given the current situation, the war could end soon, as the US and its allies have largely accomplished their key military objectives. However, experts believe that tensions remain high in the region and it may take time for the situation to fully calm down.
However, missile and drone attacks between Israel and Iran have continued throughout the conflict. Security has also been increased in several Gulf countries. It's worth noting that just a day earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said that it was up to Trump to decide how long the war would last. He said, "Trump will decide whether the war is beginning, in the middle, or at the end." Prior to this, during a speech at a House Republican meeting on Monday, Trump had called the Iran war a "short-term excursion" that could end soon, and then added, "We haven't won enough yet."
Analysts say that despite claims of a quick end to the war, the situation in the Middle East remains sensitive, and the course of events in the coming days will largely depend on political and military decisions. Earlier today, Iran, escalating the conflict and retaliating, attacked three ships near the Strait of Hormuz with unidentified projectiles. Earlier, the US military had said it had destroyed Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait. Sources told CNN that Tehran has begun laying mines in the main waterway.
Meanwhile, Israel said it launched "another wave" of attacks on targets in Tehran today (Wednesday). Northern Iran, outside the capital, Tehran, witnessed airstrikes for about an hour overnight. Meanwhile, Iran's UN ambassador has said that more than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict began.
