London: The turmoil in British politics has intensified at this time. Discussions have started regarding Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he may step down in the coming time. British media reports have claimed that Starmer has told people close to him that the current situation is not easy to handle for long. However, he does not want to take any hasty decision and is preparing to step down in an honourable manner.
The Labour government has been in constant controversy over the past few months. The opposition was already raising questions about the appointment of Peter Mandelson. After this, the performance of the Labour Party in the local elections was also not as expected. The party suffered losses in many areas, due to which uneasiness within the party has increased.
Now even within the Labour Party, voices have started being raised openly. Many MPs fear that if Starmer's popularity continues to fall like this, the party may suffer a big loss in the next election. Some party leaders believe that public trust is decreasing rapidly and the opposition can directly benefit from it.
Troubles for the Starmer government have now started coming from within as well. Former Health Minister Wes Streeting shook the foundations of the government by resigning. After leaving the post, he bluntly said that if there were any elections regarding leadership in the party, he would not back down. He also said that now is the time for Starmer to take a frank decision about his political future and that, too, without any delay.
In the latest survey, Starmer's popularity graph has come down rapidly. A large number of people have expressed their displeasure with his work. Political experts say that inflation, controversial decisions of the government and continuously arising controversies have troubled the general public. The combined effect of all this is that the Prime Minister's credibility is weakening day by day.
Experts who keep an eye on British politics believe that if this crisis within the Labor Party deepens further, then right-wing leader Nigel Farage may benefit from it. His party is constantly trying to strengthen its hold and the current political situation can give it a big opportunity.
