International News: A criminal case has been filed against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in connection with the violence and deaths that occurred during the youth-led "Gen-Z" movement in Nepal. Youth associated with the movement filed an FIR at the Kathmandu District Police Office on Tuesday. Kathmandu Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai confirmed the news.

The case has now been referred to a judicial inquiry commission, headed by Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki. A senior advocate said the FIR will establish the criminal responsibility of Oli and the author and pave the way for an investigation into the crimes committed on September 8-9.

76 people died in the agitation

On September 8th, the first day of the Gen-Z movement, 19 protesters were killed in police firing. In two days, 76 people lost their lives. The movement began with protests against corruption and demands for the lifting of government restrictions on social media. On the first day, young people demonstrated peacefully, but police opened fire without warning.

On the second day, the protests grew more violent, with several government offices set on fire. The violence and growing youth anger forced Oli to resign as Prime Minister. Now, activists of the Gen-Z movement are demanding that those responsible for the state-sponsored violence be punished and brought to justice.

Nepal elections on March 5, 2026

KP Sharma Oli resigned as Prime Minister on September 9, 2025, under pressure from Gen Z protesters. President Ramchandra Paudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as head of an interim government on September 12, and dissolved the 275-member Parliament on September 13, setting March 5, 2026 as the date for elections.

Political parties in Nepal must register for the elections between November 16 and 26. Any new party contesting the elections must register by November 15.
