Kyiv, Crisis

International News: Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kiev, Ukraine's capital, in the wee hours of Saturday, disrupting the city's calm with missile and drone strikes Explosions were heard all around and thousands of people were forced to descend into underground subway stations to save their lives. This attack took place at a time when the exchange of prisoners between the two countries had begun. This attack dealt a blow to the hope that had arisen from the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine just a few hours ago. After the talks in Istanbul, both the countries handed over hundreds of soldiers and civilians to each other in the first phase.

But this small attempt at peace was drowned in blood by the Russian attack. Timur Tkachenko, the acting head of the Kiev military administration, informed on 'Telegram' that several drones and missiles were shot down in the sky, but their debris fell in at least four areas of the city. Fire broke out at two places in the Solomyansky district. Six civilians needed immediate medical assistance.

Fear lingered in the air all night long

Local resident Yuri Bondarchuk said that as soon as the siren sounded, he had a feeling that something big was going to happen. Within a few moments, the sound of drones was heard and then there was a huge explosion. The balcony of his flat was completely broken and no trace of the windows and doors was erased. This attack loomed over the atmosphere of Kiev throughout the night.Prior to the attack, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko alerted citizens about over 20 drones heading towards the city. The drone debris fell on a mall and residential building in Kiev's Obolon district during the strike. Relief teams immediately reached the spot and the fire was brought under control.

Zelensky Announces Return of 390 Ukrainian Citizens

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that 390 Ukrainian citizens have been brought back in the first phase and more prisoners are expected to return over the weekend. Both countries have agreed to exchange thousands of prisoners. A Ukrainian official said the human swap took place in the north, near the Belarus border. The soldiers released by Russia were immediately taken to Belarusian military hospitals for medical checkups. Soldiers held photos of their family members, visibly emotional.
