Major Attack On Iran Ahead Of Trump's Ultimatum; South Pars Gas Field And Airport Targeted

Tehran: A major attack has occurred in Iran, preceding a warning issued by US President Donald Trump. According to reports from Iranian media, energy installations within Iran's South Pars natural gas field were targeted in this attack. Both Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency and Mizan News Agency have reported on the incident. These reports attributed blame for the attack to the United States and Israel.

However, neither country immediately claimed responsibility for any attack on the gas field located in Asaluyeh, in Iran's southern Bushehr province. It is worth noting that Donald Trump had issued a warning earlier this week regarding potential attacks on power plants and bridges. Meanwhile, Israel has also reportedly launched attacks on three Iranian airports.

What Did Israel's Defence Minister Say?

On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that an attack had been carried out targeting the South Pars petrochemical plant in Asaluyeh, Iran. Katz's remarks followed claims by Iran that attacks had been directed at facilities situated within the South Pars natural gas field. Katz stated that Israel had launched a massive strike against Iran's largest petrochemical plant in Asaluyeh—a key strategic target that accounts for approximately 50 percent of the country's total petrochemical output. Following an Israeli attack on facilities located in South Pars in March, Iran had begun to increasingly target oil and natural gas sites across West Asia.

What is the South Pars Gas Field?

The South Pars gas field is the world's largest natural gas reservoir, situated beneath the Persian Gulf. It is shared jointly by Iran and Qatar. On the Iranian side, the field is known as South Pars, while on the Qatari side, it is referred to as the North Field or North Dome. Iran relies on this region to meet its domestic energy requirements, whereas Qatar utilizes it primarily for global LNG exports.
