New Delhi: The US military has successfully extracted one of its pilots and an airman from Iran. The two had been stranded there after their US F-15 fighter jet crashed within Iranian territory. Following a rescue operation that spanned several days, they were finally extracted from Iran's Isfahan province. This mission is now making headlines—not only for its precise execution but also for the staggering cost incurred to carry it out. The US spared no expense on this "Mission Impossible." According to reports, the United States spent a staggering $500 million on the operation.

Was This The Most Challenging Rescue Operation?

US officials have described this rescue effort as one of the most challenging combat and rescue missions ever undertaken. The area where the American pilot was stranded is situated within a mountainous terrain. Conducting a rescue operation there was extremely difficult due to the significant threat posed by the Iranian military. The US deployed its full might in the effort to save the pilots. The mission involved a host of advanced military assets, including A-10 Thunderbolt II jets, MC-130J Commando II aircraft, Black Hawk helicopters, and MQ-9 Reaper drones. Several of these assets were lost during the course of the mission, resulting in substantial losses for the United States.

Was This A Round-the-Clock Rescue Effort?

According to a report by 'The New York Times', personnel from the US Navy SEAL Team 6 successfully rescued the officer in question. The report noted that the operation involved hundreds of Special Operations troops and other military personnel operating deep within enemy territory. It is worth noting that Iran had shot down the US fighter jet—an F-15E Strike Eagle—on Friday in the southwestern region of the country. The aircraft's two crew members managed to successfully eject. One of the pilots was rescued almost immediately, while the US launched an intense, round-the-clock search-and-rescue effort—involving ground operations within Iran—to locate the second pilot.

How Did The Pilot Hide in a Crevice?

According to reports, after ejecting from the F-15E, the pilot took cover inside a crevice within a mountain. He evaded the Iranian military for over 24 hours. During this time, he even scaled a mountain peak reaching an altitude of 7,000 feet. Initially, the US was unaware of his whereabouts, but the CIA eventually located his hiding place. Reports further state that US aircraft dropped bombs and opened fire to keep Iranian military convoys away from the area. A US military official stated that American commandos also fired shots to deter the Iranian forces from approaching the extraction site—as Iranian soldiers were advancing toward the officer in question—though they did not engage in a direct firefight with the Iranians.

What Is The Economic Impact of the War?

On one hand, the US military is spending millions of dollars on the war. On the other hand, American citizens are feeling the economic repercussions of the conflict. Amazon has announced a fuel surcharge on its e-commerce deliveries. Meanwhile, some airlines have increased fees for checked baggage to offset rising fuel costs.
