Tehran: Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei will not attend the funeral of his father and former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to media reports, this decision has been taken after the advice of security agencies. It is feared that his presence at the public event may increase the security risk.
According to Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, the representative of the supreme leader of Iran in India, Mojtaba Khamenei has been advised not to attend the funeral publicly in view of the alleged threats he is receiving from Israel and the fear of surveillance.
This decision has been taken at a time when tensions between Iran, Israel and America have increased again. Recently, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz's statement created controversy in which he claimed that Iran's new supreme leader is "on target".
In response, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi gave a strong reaction and said that if any step is taken against the Iranian leadership, it will be given an immediate and strict response.
Diplomatic efforts are also continuing amid tension. Negotiations between America and Iran are progressing under the mediation of Qatar. Both sides have agreed to continue the talks and the next meeting is likely to be held after the funeral programme.
Iranian authorities have organised tributes and funeral ceremonies at various locations from July 4 to 9 in honour of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A large number of people from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in these celebrations.
Experts believe that security arrangements will be very tight during the funeral. At the same time, the whole world is keeping an eye on the ongoing tension in the Middle East and the next round of US-Iran talks.
