Traditional attire represents any place and in a way it is its identity. Nepal is also a country which is culturally very rich and there is diversity in food, living and clothing here. Nepal Fashion Evolution

International News: Nepal is also a country which is full of diversity. People of different castes and communities live here. Apart from this, there is a difference in culture, food and clothing according to the regions. With time, many changes have come in Nepal, such as the beginning of democracy from monarchy. Along with this, there has been a change in lifestyle and clothing as well.

While men and women used to wear clothes like Suruwal, Dhaka Topi, Gunyu-Patuka earlier, today the youth's clothing has a modern touch or say western style. In this article, we will see how the clothing of Nepal has changed from the millennial people i.e. the 90s to the GEN-Z generation.

Nepal’s Attire Journey Through Generations

Nepal has a rich history. This country attracts tourists because of its natural beauty and diverse culture. Changes kept happening with time and gradually the traditional attire also changed. In this story we will see when and how many changes happened in Nepal's attire from Millennial to GEN-Z generation.

National dress of Nepal

Talking about men's clothing, 'Daura Suruwal' is considered the national dress in Nepal. Daura means upper kurta and Suruwal is worn in the lower part of the body, which is like pants. Along with this, a cloth is tied around the waist like a belt, which is called Patuka and a traditional hat 'Dhaka' is worn on the head. Most of the elderly and millennials wear it with great respect which represents the Nepali culture.

Traditional clothing of Nepali women

Nepali women also wear Gunyu Cholo and Patuka. It consists of a long blouse, around or wrap long skirt, along with Patuka. This dress was worn by women of the hilly rural areas and is also worn in urban areas on special occasions. Most women in the Terai and urban areas wear sarees. In Nepal, Sherpa and Tamang communities mostly wear woolen clothes due to the cold weather.

Changes in clothing

Nepal is a country which is situated between India, Tibet and China, therefore, due to the influence of different cultures, a mixed style can be seen on the clothes here. For example, Chappa from Tibet is a woolen garment which is like a long gown and also has a cap. In urban areas, like India, girls wear attire ranging from salwar-kurti to lehenga-chunri. On the other hand, if we talk about the influence of western fashion, it has come after the 20th century. Due to this, clothes like T-shirts, dresses, jeans also got included in the Nepali attire.

Fashion changes in the modern era

Talking about the change in fashion trends from traditional to modern in Nepal, today the young stars of urban areas, people of GEN-Z generation wear modern style attires. Boys mostly wear clothes inspired by western fashion like jeans-t-shirts, new style jackets apart from formal pants-shirts. However, even today if you look in rural areas, you will see millennials and elders in traditional attire. Especially you will see people wearing Dhaka cap.

 Changes in women's clothing

Talking about modern style, in rural areas salwar-kurta is mostly worn with saree, while in urban areas girls wear jeans-top and dresses inspired by western culture. In Nepal, you can also see a blend of modern style in traditional attire, i.e. fusion fashion is also in trend. In this, people style Dhaka fabric jackets, scarves etc. with modern dresses.

Traditional attire on festivals

Even though western style clothes have become a part of Nepal's attire and have become a comfortable favorite for people, but along with fashion, the youth also follow the culture of this place very well. Apart from festivals and special occasions, even today you will see people wearing traditional Nepali clothes on cultural festivals. At weddings, attires like Daura Suruwal, Dhaka Topi, Traditional Saree are especially worn.

New era of fashion in Nepal

Dhaka fabric here has started getting international recognition, while fashion designers are doing new experiments and traditional clothes are being given a modern touch. Due to which traditional attires are becoming more trendy like handmade shawls, jackets.
