International News: Although the immediate reason for the protests in Nepal is the ban on social media, the old people who were recently opposing the Oli government over the restoration of monarchy are also involved in this protest. Nepal's Prime Minister Oli is already surrounded on two fronts. This is the reason why the violent protests of Generation-Z have shaken the foundations of the government.
The uproar of Generation-Z has become violent in Nepal. On Monday, Generation-Z protesters entered the Parliament building, after which the police opened fire on the protesters. In view of the movement, curfew has been imposed in entire Kathmandu. In fact, people of Generation-Z are protesting against the government in big cities of Nepal including Kathmandu against the ban on social networking apps like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
This is the first time that protests are being held in a country over using a social networking app. Nepal, with an 82 percent Hindu population, is a South Asian country, which is neighboured by China-occupied Tibet and India.
The posters put up on the streets of Kathmandu say that this is a protest against the corruption of KP Sharma Oli's government and the ban on social media. Serious allegations of corruption have been leveled against the Oli government. Last week, the Nepal government decided to ban 25 apps like Facebook and Instagram.
Gen-G protesters say that the government wants to control social networking sites through law, so that people cannot raise their voice openly. This law was also opposed in the Parliament. The opposition called it a stifling law. However, due to having a majority, the government easily got it passed in the House.
This cannot be denied outright. Hindu leader Durga Prasai is also involved in the Generation-Z protests. Recently, Durga Prasai has come out on bail. Prasai had protested in Kathmandu in June 2025 to bring back monarchy and remove democracy. After that, Prasai was accused of treason, but he got bail.
The protests of Generation-Z are happening at a time when Nepal's Oli government is badly surrounded on two fronts. The first front has opened up within his party CPM (UML). Former President Vidya Devi Bhandari wants to come back to active politics, but Oli is not letting her.
There is a ruckus in the inner circles of the party regarding this. At the same time, another front has opened in the coalition partner Nepali Congress. Many senior leaders of Congress are talking about withdrawing support from Oli. Congress has more MPs than Oli's party in the Nepal Parliament.
