International News:A major tragedy struck Nigeria’s Sokoto state on Sunday when a passenger boat carrying over 50 people capsized while heading toward Goronyo market. Authorities have confirmed that at least 40 passengers are still missing, while 10 survivors have been rescued so far.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the accident occurred during a routine river crossing. Many villagers use boats daily to reach local markets, but overcrowding, poor safety standards, and unpredictable water conditions often make such journeys dangerous.

Rescue Operations Underway

NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar quickly activated emergency measures after receiving the report. A team has been deployed to the site to coordinate relief work and assist the victims’ families.

NEMA stated that, together with local authorities and emergency teams, it is stepping up search and rescue efforts to trace those who are still missing. We are committed to saving lives, providing timely information, and ensuring all necessary assistance for the affected families.”

Local divers and rescue workers are also involved in the mission, though poor visibility in the river and strong currents are slowing down progress. Officials admitted that the chances of survival for many missing passengers are decreasing as hours pass, but the search continues at full speed.

A Recurring Tragedy in Nigeria

Boat mishaps are unfortunately common in Nigeria, where rivers serve as key transportation routes for villagers and traders. Lack of proper safety checks, coupled with frequent overcrowding, often results in accidents that claim many lives.

A similar incident occurred on 17 December 2024, when a boat with 76 passengers overturned in Benue State. In that case, NEMA managed to rescue 49 people, while three bodies were recovered. Investigations revealed that the driver had accidentally collided with a tree submerged in the river, leading to the mishap.

These repeated tragedies highlight the urgent need for better safety regulations, including strict monitoring of passenger numbers, enforcement of life jacket usage, and improved training for boat operators.

Families Await News of Loved Ones

While rescue efforts are underway in Sokoto, families of those still unaccounted for wait by the riverbank in deep anxiety. Local reports described heartbreaking scenes as relatives held on to hope even as worries mounted.

For now, the focus remains on the search and recovery efforts, while authorities face increasing pressure to prevent such disasters in the future. Until safety standards are strengthened, Nigeria’s waterways may continue to pose deadly risks for those who depend on them daily.
