Khartoum: A major revelation has emerged regarding how Pakistan, which constantly laments the plight of Muslims, is orchestrating the killing of Muslims in Sudan through a proxy war. This exposes a complex web of alliances in the Middle East. Pakistan, which is always at the beck and call of the Arab nations, has a notorious record of sending its army to fight proxy wars at the behest of Saudi Arabia.
It has been revealed that Pakistan has intensified the proxy war in Sudan to strengthen its strategic position within the Saudi camp. For several months, a conflict has raged in Sudan between the military government led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo, resulting in thousands of deaths. This has become a battleground for regional powers.
Saudi Arabia supports the Sudanese government, fearing that the instability in Sudan could spread to the Red Sea region. The United Arab Emirates, on the other hand, supports the RSF. However, Pakistan has now entered the fray through an arms deal, supplying fighter jets to Khartoum. This is tilting the balance of power in favor of Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan is going to sell JF-17 fighter jets to the Saudi-backed army in Sudan. This deal will be worth approximately $4 billion and includes missiles and other weapons. A major revelation is that $2 billion of the loan Pakistan has taken from Saudi Arabia will be deducted from this deal. This means Saudi Arabia is buying Pakistani fighter jets for the Sudanese army. The deal also includes drones, light attack aircraft, and air defense systems worth approximately $1.5 billion. This will not only reduce Pakistan's economic pressure but also diminish the influence of the United Arab Emirates in Sudan.
According to a South Asia Press report, by providing weapons to Burhan's government, Pakistan is directly helping to prevent the fall of the Saudi-backed government, which Saudi Arabia considers essential for maintaining its influence in the Horn of Africa. This partnership is a significant escalation for Islamabad, which has historically provided mercenary support and training to Gulf countries.
Surprisingly, through this deal, Pakistan is hoping to sell its JF-17 fighter jets in the global market. Meanwhile, a Pakistani journalist recently wrote a news story for Reuters claiming that Saudi Arabia was going to buy Pakistani fighter jets. This raises the question of whether he was referring to this very deal, as that deal also involved a fighter jet sale on loan terms.
By making such arms deals, Pakistan is also deceiving the United States. Pakistan has long received military aid, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic support from the US, especially in the name of counter-terrorism operations. Yet, it is betraying the US by selling Chinese-licensed weapons (JF-17 Fighter Jets). Pakistan is undermining the very alliance that has sustained it. On the other hand, Pakistan is surviving on loans from the United Arab Emirates. Last month, the UAE president invested a billion dollars in the Pakistani army's Fauji Foundation, yet the UAE is simultaneously undermining its own strategic interests in Sudan.
The civil war in Sudan began on April 15, 2023, and has already claimed over 150,000 lives. Several international reports suggest the actual death toll is likely much higher. Some independent assessments by former US envoys indicate that, considering the widespread famine and disease, the number of deaths could exceed 400,000.
