New Delhi: The news of tussles within the security apparatus in Pakistan has intensified. Army Chief Field Marshal Asif Munir has started major changes at the top level by raising questions on the functioning of the intelligence agency ISI. The move comes after increasing terror attacks and intelligence failures in recent months. It is being said that the army now wants direct accountability from the intelligence system and that is why a strict message has been given.
According to reports, no concrete intelligence information could be obtained in advance regarding many major attacks in recent times. Due to this the army suffered heavy losses and suffered setbacks in many campaigns. This is the reason why coordination between the Army and ISI seems to be weakening, which was rarely seen earlier.
Sources say that continuous security lapses have raised questions on the efficiency of ISI. There is a strong feeling within the army that the intelligence agency failed to gather information in time, due to which the soldiers suffered heavy losses.
The activities of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch militant groups have continued to increase. Attacks have intensified in areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. These incidents have made the security situation more serious and have increased the pressure on the army to control the situation.
In an important meeting held recently, the army chief warned in clear words – “Perform or be ready to step down.” This message was directly for intelligence officers. It is believed that after this, a large-scale reshuffle process has started within the ISI.
According to insiders, many ISI officials are uncomfortable with such direct interference. There is a feeling within the agency that the army is interfering in its autonomy. However, due to the current security situation, open protest is not coming forward.
Analysts believe this could be just the beginning. More big changes can be seen in the coming time, because the army is now trying to bring the intelligence system completely under its control. This may affect both the power structure and security strategy of Pakistan.
According to experts, unless terrorist activities are controlled at the ground level, the situation will not improve completely through internal changes alone. The current indications show that the security challenges within Pakistan are far from over.
