Philippines Hit by 6.9 Quake (X)
Earthquake in Philippines: A powerful earthquake on Tuesday night in the Philippines created panic. The intensity of the earthquake was measured 6.9 and due to this at least 20 people died and many were injured. The walls of houses and buildings collapsed, and the power supply was disrupted.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 17 km from Bogo city. Bogo is a coastal city in Sebu province of Central Philippines, which has a population of around 90,000. 14 people died in Bogo. Officials have warned that the death toll may increase.
There is a possibility of many people being trapped in a landslide in a hill village. Officers are trying to intensify rescue operations. Some injured were rushed to the hospital, but it is difficult to reach the area.
Six people, including three Coast Guard, a fire worker and a child, died in separate incidents in the city of San Remigio, south of Bogo. The city's water supply has been damaged. The mayor appealed to the people to help food and water.
Bogo firefighter Ray Canete said the earthquake was so strong that concrete walls of homes and roads were damaged. He and three other firefighters were injured.
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro said a true assessment of the damage would only be possible after sunrise. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has issued a warning of a possible tsunami up to 1 meter high and urged people in coastal areas to be vigilant.
