Washington: US President Donald Trump has recently praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi openly. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that his talks with Modi are going very well and he may visit India soon. He said that PM Modi wants to invite him to visit India and trade relations between the two countries should be further strengthened. When reporters asked directly whether he would visit India, Trump replied, "Yeah, probably." He also said that India has reduced the purchase of oil and weapons from Russia, which was America's biggest objection.
Earlier in August, The New York Times had reported that Trump would not come to India for the Quad summit this year. The reason was—America imposed heavy tariffs on Indian goods. Earlier Trump had assured to come, but later changed the plan. Now from the latest statement it seems that his attitude has become positive.
Trump made these comments as the White House was announcing a new initiative to reduce the cost of obesity drugs. A company representative suddenly fainted during the press briefing, halting the program for a few minutes. Then it started again.
Trade talks are still ongoing. America has imposed a tariff of up to 50% on India for purchasing oil from Russia. But the White House press secretary said that Trump is very positive about India-US relations and wants to strengthen the partnership. A few weeks ago, Trump celebrated Diwali with Indian-American officials in the Oval Office and spoke to Modi on the phone. According to the White House, Trump considers India very important.
Responding to Trump's statement, India said that its energy policy is based on national interest. The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs clarified that India is a big importer of oil and gas. Affordable, safe and stable energy is the priority of consumers. Therefore, India buys energy from different countries so that prices remain controlled.
Overall, the personal relationship between Trump and Modi seems strong. There are challenges in trade, but both countries are keen to increase cooperation. The possibility of visiting India has raised new hopes.
