Germany: Breaking the belief that doctors and nurses are given the status of God, a male nurse in Germany took the lives of patients. The court found him guilty of murder of 10 patients and attempted murder of 27 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The investigation found that he used to give lethal quantities of sedatives and painkillers to elderly and seriously ill patients while on night duty.

Why did nurses kill patients?

According to media reports, the accused nurse wanted to reduce the pressure of working the night shift. He wanted patients to fall asleep early and have an easier night. For this, he gave such a high dose of medicines, which gradually became the cause of death of many patients. The prosecution says that the name of the nurse is not being made public due to security reasons.

Which dangerous medicines were given to the patients?

Investigation revealed that he gave excessive doses of morphine and midazolam to many patients. These medicines are given to reduce severe pain and to render the patient unconscious, but in excessive quantities they can prove fatal. It is believed that the nurse had been doing this for a long time, but the suspicion deepened when the condition of many elderly patients suddenly started deteriorating in a short period of time.

How long had the nurse been working?

The accused had completed nursing training in 2007 and was employed at the hospital in Wurslane since 2020. The police arrested him in 2024. The investigating agencies are now finding out whether such suspicious deaths had taken place in any hospital or ward before.

How much punishment will you get?

In Germany, life imprisonment means a minimum of 15 years in prison, although in such serious cases the punishment can increase further. This case is related to the death of patients on such a large scale that the court has indicated not to release the nurse soon. Germany has seen such a case before also. In 2019, a nurse named Niels Hegel was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders of 85 patients.
