U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would suspend tariffs on Mexican goods for a month following discussions with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum. This decision has led to positive signals regarding ongoing talks on trade and security between the two countries.

In a social media post, President Trump explained that the tariff suspension would allow for continued negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement. Sheinbaum confirmed this development, stating that both nations would begin collaborating on security and trade. "Our teams will start working today on two critical areas: security and trade," Sheinbaum wrote in a post.

Steps taken by Mexico

As part of the agreement, Mexico has decided to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to combat drug trafficking at the U.S. border. This move is seen as a significant step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation and enhancing security between the two nations.

Trump’s Tariff announcement

On February 1, Trump had announced tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. The tariffs included a 25% levy on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on goods imported from China. The White House referred to this decision as a "bold action," aiming to hold these countries accountable for their promises. Trump emphasized that the tariffs were intended to curb illegal immigration and prevent the supply of toxic substances, such as fentanyl, into the U.S.

Following Trump's announcement, Canada imposed a 25% tariff on U.S. goods. Meanwhile, China expressed its intention to take "countermeasures," escalating tensions in trade relations between the two nations.

Trump and Trudeau’s ongoing discussions

In addition, President Trump engaged in talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the tariffs. Trump mentioned on social media, "I spoke with Justin Trudeau. We will discuss again at 3 p.m. today." Trump clarified that the tariffs were part of the "war on drugs," with the primary goal of halting the fentanyl supply. The White House added that while Mexico is taking the order seriously, Canada has misinterpreted it as a trade war.
