Doha: Thirteen people lost their lives in a massive explosion at the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. In an official statement released on Monday, QatarEnergy announced that the fatalities occurred late Sunday night in the Barzan area of Ras Laffan Industrial City—the country's major energy hub. Expressing deep sorrow over this unfortunate incident, the company extended its condolences to the bereaved families.

What did QatarEnergy announce?

A company spokesperson stated that the explosion took place during the restart process of a domestic gas supply plant following maintenance work. A fire broke out immediately after the blast but was swiftly brought under control by local firefighting and emergency response teams.

Preliminary reports indicate that the majority of the deceased are Indian and Pakistani nationals. QatarEnergy provided further details, stating that a total of 66 people were injured in the accident. The injured include nationals from Qatar, India, Pakistan, Tanzania, Guinea, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Nigeria. The company assured that all injured individuals were promptly taken to the hospital and that their injuries are not critical; none are reported to be in serious condition.

Why is Ras Laffan significant?

Ras Laffan is Qatar's largest industrial and energy hub, housing some of the world's largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production plants and export facilities. This region is a cornerstone of Qatar's economic prosperity and plays a vital role in the global LNG supply chain. QatarEnergy clarified that the explosion has not impacted LNG production, export operations, or the infrastructure of the Ras Laffan port. Both the plant and the port are operating normally at full capacity. The company has assured the global market that there will be no disruption to gas supplies.

QatarEnergy has constituted a high-level technical committee to investigate the precise cause of the explosion. A team of experts has arrived at the site to gather evidence. While preliminary findings suggest the blast occurred during the restart process, no definitive conclusion has been reached pending the final report. Local authorities and security agencies have stepped up security across the area. The injured are being provided with excellent medical care.

It is worth noting that an Iranian missile struck Ras Laffan in March, causing a fire and extensive damage. Qatar had suspended production there following that incident. Reports indicate that the accident occurred while efforts were being made to restart operations. All the injured are currently undergoing treatment.
