Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula – How Strong Was It?

International News: The east coast of Russia's Kamchatka region was badly shaken when a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred on Saturday. Its center was located at a depth of about 10 km above the sea surface. After the earthquake, the administration has issued a tsunami alert for the coastal areas within a radius of 300 km.

So far no information has been revealed about someone's injuries or large-scale property loss. Relief and rescue teams have been alerted and people living along the sea have been advised to visit safe places.

An earthquake of 8.8 magnitude came a month ago

The earthquake occurred a month after a fierce 8.8 magnitude shaking, which was felt in the Kamchatka Peninsula in July. Due to the earthquake of July, a 4-meter-high tsunami wave arose in the Pacific Ocean. At that time, large numbers of people were evacuated to safe places in Japan, Hawaii, Russia and other coastal areas.

The situation in Japan had become so serious that about 2 million people were ordered to go to high areas. However, the warning was withdrawn after the situation came under control.

Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula is counted among the areas of the world where there is always a risk of earthquake. This area is highly active in geological terms, due to which there are constant light to severe earthquakes. After the earthquake in July, the situation became so serious that apart from Russia, countries like America, Japan, Hawaii, Chile and Costa Rica also had to issue tsunami alerts.

Why do earthquakes come?

The earth rests on 12 major tectonic plates, which continue to move very slowly. These plates slide about 4 to 5 millimeters every year. When these plates collide with each other or move downwards, a large amount of energy is released from that conflict. This energy is felt as an earthquake.
