International News: Russia has accused the United States of trying to control developing countries through what it calls a "new colonial approach." On Monday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Washington is using unfair trade practices, such as tariffs, to dominate the Global South and interfere in their internal matters.

This statement comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for new tariffs on several countries. According to Russia, this move directly attacks the economic independence of poorer nations, particularly those in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

What is the Global South?

The term "Global South" refers to developing nations, often low-income or middle-income countries mainly located in the Southern Hemisphere. These include nations from Africa, South America, and parts of Asia. These countries face ongoing challenges related to development, economic stability, and international influence.

Russia Says Sanctions Are Hurting the World

Zakharova described Western sanctions as a "sad reality" that is hurting not just targeted countries but the global economy. She said the U.S. is using economic pressure as a political tool against any country that refuses to follow its lead.

She also criticized what she called "politically motivated protectionism," saying that the West is building tariff walls instead of promoting free trade, which it once claimed to support.

BRICS and Global Partnerships

Russia highlighted its growing cooperation with other developing countries. Zakharova specifically mentioned BRICS, a group originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In recent years, more countries have joined the group, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia is expected to join in 2025.

Russia believes that by working with these nations, they can build a fairer, more balanced international system that is not controlled by a single superpower.

U.S. Policies Harming Global Economy, Says Russia

According to Russia, U.S. economic policies are causing serious global issues, including disruptions in supply chains and even a risk of global recession. They argue that the idea of free trade is being replaced by selfish national interests and economic restrictions designed to benefit only a few powerful countries.

Zakharova said Russia will continue to support its Global South partners and work towards creating a multipolar world where power is shared equally among nations.
