International News: There was a sudden turn in French politics on Tuesday night. President Emmanuel Macron appointed Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu as the new Prime Minister of the country. This decision was taken when Prime Minister François Bayrou was forced to step down after losing the confidence vote in Parliament.

Took charge at the age of 39

Lecornu is just 39 years old and until recently was the youngest defense minister in the history of the country. Now by making him the prime minister, Macron has made it clear that he is relying on the leadership of the new generation to stop political instability. Interestingly, this is the fourth time in the last year that France has gotten a new prime minister.

Why did Bayrou fall?

François Bayrou had not even completed a year as Prime Minister. He was brought to this post last year after Michel Barnier. But as soon as he presented the 2026 budget before Parliament and challenged the vote of confidence, the situation changed. The opposition and allies together left him. The result was that Bayrou lost the vote of confidence and had to resign.

The economic crisis became the biggest test

Now, after taking over the new responsibility, the most difficult task before Lecornu will be to get the budget passed in the Parliament. France is currently struggling with huge debt, increasing public expenditure, and financial imbalance. This is the reason why it will not be easy for him to win the trust of not only the Parliament but also the public.

Macron's new bet

By choosing Lecornu, President Macron has indicated that he trusts young leadership and tough decisions. Lecornu has so far created an active and decisive image in the Defense Ministry. It is believed that this image of his can prove to be a strength for Macron as the prime minister.

However, the opposition has already warned that it will not support the government without a solid economic roadmap. In such a situation, the coming weeks will decide how successful this bet of Macron is and whether Lecornu will be able to stabilize the government by appeasing the Parliament.
