Tarique Rahman Chosen Parliamentary Party Leader, Set to Take Oath as Bangladesh PM at 4 PM (OpenAi)
Dhaka: The process of transfer of power was completed on Tuesday with the formation of the new Parliament in Bangladesh. The newly elected MPs were administered the oath of office and secrecy at the National Parliament complex in Dhaka. With this, the chapter of the interim government ended and the new political system formally took over the functioning. During the oath ceremony, many important political signals also emerged inside and outside the Parliament, which seem to be determining the direction of the coming days.
The CEC administered the oath to the MPs in a ceremony held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament House. There was hustle and bustle on the campus since morning and all the elected representatives took oath as per the schedule. Many senior political leaders and special guests were also present on this occasion.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party elected its president Tarique Rahman as the leader of the parliamentary party in the party meetings held before the oath. Party leaders called it a sign of unity and clear leadership of the organization. The strategy for the upcoming sessions was also discussed in the meeting.
BNP MPs decided at a parliamentary committee meeting that they will not accept duty-free vehicles and plots given by the government. Party leaders say that this step has been taken to give the message of simplicity and accountability in politics.
Consensus could not be reached on the membership of the Constitutional Reform Council. Some BNP MPs clearly said that they will not take oath as members of this council. He argues that before implementing any new system, due approval from the Parliament is necessary.
Jamaat-e-Islami MPs took oaths as members of Parliament as well as members of the Constitutional Reform Council. Party leaders indicated that if other parties distance themselves from the council, political talks would be required.
The head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, resigned from his post while addressing the nation. He said that the objective of the interim arrangement was to conduct peaceful elections, which has been accomplished. He appealed to the new government to maintain democratic values.
Tarique Rahman decided to retain Dhaka-17 seat and leave Bogra-6 seat. Due to this, by-elections will be held in Bogra-6. Apart from this, due to the death of a candidate on another seat, the process of by-election will also start.
After the victory of some candidates from the minority community from BNP in the elections, there is talk that they may get representation in the cabinet. Party sources say that the new government is considering presenting an inclusive image.
After the swearing-in, constitutional reforms, administrative changes and economic policies are likely to be the main agenda in Parliament. Looking at the stance of different parties, it is clear that along with consensus, differences may also come to the fore in the coming sessions.
