International News: The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has once again turned into a violent confrontation. So far 14 people have died in the fierce firing and rocket attacks between the armies of the two countries, including a Thai soldier and 13 civilians. More than 40 people are reported to be injured. The situation became so serious that the Thai Air Force also carried out air strikes twice with F-16 fighter planes.
According to the Thai Defense Ministry, conflict situations arose at six different places on Thursday. Earlier on Wednesday, five Thai soldiers were injured when a landmine exploded in the border area. After this incident, the Thai government expelled the Cambodian ambassador from the country and also recalled its diplomat.
Tensions escalated further on Friday when troops from the two countries came face-to-face near the disputed Ta Muen Thom temple near Oddar Meanchey province. Eyewitnesses reported that sounds of heavy artillery and rockets have been heard since morning. According to Thai officials, at least 14 people have been killed, and more than 100,000 civilians have been displaced due to the escalation of fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces.
Civilian casualties have also been confirmed by Cambodia, which shows the seriousness of this conflict. The Thai Health Minister has drawn the attention of the international community by calling this action a violation of the Geneva Convention.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed to both countries to exercise restraint and find a solution through dialogue. Experts believe that this conflict is a worrying situation between ASEAN countries. Earlier in 2011, 20 people lost their lives in a similar clash. The situation has now become like a war, and this conflict is becoming a major threat to regional peace.
