New Delhi: Relations between India and Canada deteriorated significantly during Justin Trudeau's tenure. However, relations between the two countries are now back on track. A major reason for this is the US foreign policy. The US is constantly aggressive towards Canada and is threatening to increase tariffs. Furthermore, Donald Trump has even claimed that he will make Canada the 51st state. In this situation, Prime Minister Mark Carney is making every possible effort to improve relations with India. He may visit India soon. This visit will be crucial for the relations between the two countries.
On Republic Day 2026, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand over the phone. Important discussions were held regarding the Canadian Prime Minister's visit. Several important agreements could be signed between the two countries during PM Carney's visit. These will include issues related to energy, uranium, and minerals.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said in a social media post, "Had a very positive conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand this morning. We discussed enhancing mutual cooperation and strengthening relations. Formal talks on bilateral trade and partnership will begin soon. An agreement has been reached on this."
Talks on energy cooperation between Canada and India are scheduled to begin this week. Canada's Energy Minister will participate in Energy Week being held in Goa. During this time, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri will meet with him. The two leaders will have extensive discussions on areas such as critical minerals, uranium, and LNG. It is worth noting that the trivial issues that Justin Trudeau was using to sour relations are no longer being discussed; instead, Canada appears eager to enhance trade relations with India. PM Mark Carney is also often seen participating in Hindu events in Canada.
